About the Club

The Bay of Islands Aero Club caters for both Microlight and General Aviation (PPL) flying. It has comprehensive club rooms and has hangarage for two aircraft. Currently the Club has in excess of thirty active members, many of whom own their own aircraft kept elsewhere on the airfield. Our aircraft are flown by suitably qualified instructors and club members.

Location

The Bay of Islands Aero Club is located at Kerikeri Airport to the immediate right of the terminal, 218 Wiroa Road.

Flight Training

The Aero Club offers flying lessons for Microlight and PPL (Private Pilots Licence). Please contact us if you'd like to try an introductory flight. We can then discuss pricing for flying lessons. There are also six exams you'll need to study for and pass, which include: Technical Knowledge, Radio (Radiotelephony), Weather (Meteorology), Navigation, Aviation Law, and Human Performance Inflight (Human Factors). You'll need to study these independently, and our instructors will guide you on how and where to find the study materials, as well as share their expert knowledge.

Introductory Flights

Interested in seeing what it is like to control an aircraft over the picturesque Bay of Islands? Or maybe you have a friend or relative who has always had a desire to try flying? What better gift could there be but giving them the opportunity to try their hand at flying with one of the Club’s aircraft. Under the watchful guidance of a qualified instructor any new pilot can see if the world of aviation is for them. Before your flight there is a briefing to help familiarise you with the aircraft that you will be flying in, and what you should expect during the flight in terms of where you will go, what you will see, and the sensations you will enjoy.

Clubrooms

The club operates from a combined clubroom and hangar jointly owned with the Northland Coastguard Air Patrol. It has its own carpark, kitchen, large deck and un-licenced bar area. The clubrooms are regularly used by groups such as CAA (for the AvKiwi aviation seminars), Triple 1 First Aid (for practical first aid training), and by several local activity groups. The clubrooms are available for private functions by arrangement.
